These paintings are quiet contemporary examinations of large homes that were build in a time of empire and colonization. They document the disappearance of an era of opulence. These homes functioned to reflect status, using ornate detailing, scale and regal settings. They were not primarily built as an investment asset as homes are today. This series of works are “an inside job” bearing witness to a world in which the existence of these sumptuous surroundings pose questions about how we organize our society - its needs and desires. Can beauty that has been created at the expense of others still be truly beautiful? Is there still a case that can be made for these dwellings that go far beyond the requirements of utilitarian human shelter?
